by Marianne Isabel A. Sayo, MD

The East Avenue Medical Center Department of Dermatology has held it’s fifth postgraduate course entitled, “Tabula Rasa: Evaluation, Aesthetics, Medical and Careers in Dermatology, last August 3, 2018. This event has marked the department’s commitment to move towards greater heights. It was befitting that the theme for our postgraduate course “Tabula Rasa” was chosen, as we went back to the basics and evaluated what has been and what was more to come in the field of dermatology.

The topics presented by our esteemed speakers included the following: multidisciplinary approach to skin cancers, dermoscopy of non-melanocytic skin tumors, emerging therapies in the management of blistering diseases, and fresh insights to an age-long problem on acne.

Topics on medications were the following:  the use of biologic treatment for psoriasis, corticosteroid use in atopic dermatitis, and botanical acne care solutions in the Philippines. In addition, there were also lectures related to aesthetics that included: discovering the side effects of cosmetics, breakthrough in anti-aging and applications of mesotherapy in skin rejuvenation. Additional lectures that gave interest to our postgraduate course were the following: Updated diagnostics and management in pediatric dermatology, neuromodulators and facial expression in the context of the social brain, role of diet in skin health, and the role of social media in dermatology.

The event was filled with a series of topics filled with new insight, wisdom and an abundance of information that our department has to offer from our roster of esteemed speakers. Indeed, the event was a success with a total of 168 attendees.
