The Region 1 Medical Center, a Department of Health accredited tertiary training, teaching and
research hospital is located in the business, education and health center of Dagupan City, Pangasinan. It
has been delivering affordable and accessible healthcare services for almost a century, working on a 600
bed capacity, and is the first DOH hospital in Northern Luzon to be ISO: 2015 accredited.
The Department of Dermatology was established in January 2018 upon the initiative of Dr. May
Gonzales, with the approval of the Medical Center Chief, Dr. Joseph Roland O. Mejia. This move was to
address the increasing number of patients and their awareness of dermatological concerns and needs and
in line with the Department of Health’s memorandum for establishing Regional Dermatology Centers to
serve as milieu for medical services in far- flung areas in Pangasinan and Northern Luzon. This then led to
the opening of doors to more Philippine Dermatological Consultants as well as residents in training.
The department started with just 3 consultants and 2 residents. Now, a total of 14 accredited
dermatologists are manning the different units such as the Dermatopathology, Dermatological Surgery ,
Contact Dermatitis, Photocutaneous Medicine, Hansen’s Disease, Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology,
Pediatric Dermatology, Research and Community Dermatology. To answer the need for alternative and
safe consultations during the pandemic, the department pioneered the Telemedicine service in the
institution. To date, it has been giving the hospital the highest census of Teledermatology consultations
through the R1MC E-Pacheck up.
After having successfully met all the requirements as training institution and with the pioneer graduates
passing the Diplomate Boards, the Board of Accreditation and Board of Directors of the Philippine
Dermatological Society recognized the department with full accreditation in July 2021, making it the 13 th
accredited institution of the Society and the 1 st in Northern Luzon. The department is set forth to be and
Advanced Comprehensive Dermatology Center in Northern Luzon.
