LOOKING FORWARD

Dr. Ma. Angela T. Medina-Lavadia, FPDS

SPACE
We are all on a journey towards Skin Health for All. As Dermatologists, we have an inherent desire to know more, to do more, and to achieve more, to respond to the skin health needs of the people we serve, our countrymen, the Filipinos. In this direction, the PDS has traversed many colorful and exciting paths in the last two years. As we continue to travel together, new scenes and horizons unfold before us, revealing an ever-expanding world of exciting roles and possibilities for PDS, the DermAuthority.
SPACE
GROWING
Fresh growth and development is evident, promoted through our numerous CME/CPD activities. A thousand sprouting buds have bloomed into a field of colors and scents. From our conventions, the monthly CMEs, the LEAP and Mini-LEAP events complemented by our AAD Beyond and the Biologics Masterclass series, new learning interests have been touched, inspired and built up. The multifarious activities of our subspecialty core groups speak for themselves as well: the DermSurg Toxin and Filler Workshops, the Continuing Laser Education Seminars, the Atopic Dermatitis and Beyond Summit, the HIV Counselling workshop, the Patch Testing CME session, the DermPath Reviews and now, even the Psychodermatology Interest group meeting! We see that as we learn and absorb, we grow and reach out for more and more… and the DermAuthority is nourished and further enhanced.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
On our journey, we have encountered many colleagues and co-workers traversing similar roads and pathways. Building relationships with them is vital!
SPACE
Our relationship with the PMA is at an all-time high. A memorandum of agreement between the PMA and the PDS regarding dermatologic service at the PMA Indigency Clinic is being worked out. Our Skin Fair/Skin Museum and Free Clinics at the PMA Auditorium during Medicine Week were greatly appreciated. The Bulilit Congress handled by the PDS Central Luzon chapter was a landmark joint PMA-PDS project, with standing requests for echoes already!
SPACE
Our relationship with the DOH is expanding… we are coordinating with them not only in the field of Leprosy, but also in psoriasis, neglected tropical diseases, and environmental health monitoring and response. We are asked to help in the Kilatis Kutis Program. Our members have a key role in the development of Regional Dermatology Centers all over the country. I personally encourage all PDS members to consider responding to this challenging yet noble cause of service through the DOH system.
SPACE
Cooperation, coordination and collaboration with other groups…co-travelers on the same road… has been fulfilling. Other medical societies, patient organizations, advocacy groups, various local government units, non-governmental organizations and church organizations all enhance and enrich out paths.
SPACE
In the global Dermatology world, linkages have been forged and bonds strengthened with the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS), the International Society of Dermatology (ISD), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), and the League of ASEAN Dermatological Societies (LADS). Significantly, the PDS is a Founding Society Member of the newly birthed Asian League of Dermatological Societies (ALDS). We have shared our experiences with our international colleagues at the AAD Global Education Day in San Diego 2018 and at the ILDS World Skin Summit in Vietnam 2018. Next year, PDS will be co-hosting three international Dermatological meetings: the 2nd Asian Eczema Masterclass, February 2019; the ISDS World Congress, September 2019 and the International Leprosy Congress, also in September 2019.
SPACE
Yes, the road we are traveling is colorful and building relationships along the way is enriching indeed!
SPACE
REACHING OUT
In our sojourn, we see the need to be in touch with the real world…real people in the communities where we are. In our numerous Skin Fairs and Skin Museum exhibits, hundreds and thousands of people from all walks of life listen to our lectures, learn from educational booth displays and are given free dermatological consults.
SPACE
We do not forget those on the little pathways and side streets—those who need our help the most. We go where there is no dermatologist. In addition to our already established Banaue Ifugao Medical/DermSurgical Mission, we now have our “Islands Medical/Dermsurgical Mission” launched in rehabilitating Boracay with the yPDS and DermSurgery group. As always, we are excited about our SKINWEEK Free Clinics—with over 70 scheduled this November.
SPACE
DREAMING AND BECOMING
Through all these activities together, we feel a quiet stirring within us, a growing enthusiasm and energy, a surging force of positive action, an empowering optimism and faith that we have a definite role to play in the Philippine medical world. The PDS is blessed to be a blessing to our countrymen. We see ourselves moving together as one—dreaming dreams, working together and achieving our mission of Skin Health for All—be it in the metropolis or in the regional chapters; in the big symposia or in the mini-meetings; in the tertiary medical centers or in our small private clinics.
SPACE
Some of the roads were and still are bumpy and rocky, yet the PDS has prevailed… seemingly steered and guided by an All Seeing, All Knowing, All Loving Hand, even in an uncharted territory.
SPACE
As we look forward, our journey continues…renewed and strengthened by the many happy, exciting, colorful and challenging experiences we faced together in the last two years. With confident faith and by God’s grace we are privileged to be
