History

The Southern Isabela Medical Center Department of Dermatology & Venereology was established on June 1, 2020, through the encouragement and support of then Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Jose Ildefonso Costales and through the leadership of its chair, Dr. Louella Fatima Ramos. SIMC is a 350-bed tertiary government hospital located in Santiago City, Isabela. Its catchment area includes not only Isabela but  Quirino, Northern Nueva Vizcaya, Northern Ifugao and Eastern Mountain Province. SIMC is an ISO 9001:2015 certified and PGS-compliant institution. As a referral hospital, the Dermatology Center serves as the Regional Specialty Center for Dermatology in Cagayan Valley.

The department logo is inspired by the three mountain ranges namely Sierra Madre, Caraballo and Cordillera surrounding the valley, artfully representing the layers of the skin. The yellow color on top represents the rising sun as we are located on the eastern part of Luzon. The hair follicle with rice grain on the distal part intertwines the overall representation of dermatology and connects to the main product of the region which SIMC serves. This symbolic representation not only pays homage to the local landscape but also signifies the department’s dedication to serving the community at every level.

The residency training program of the department was recognized by the Philippine Dermatological Society Board of Accreditation as an Applicant Institution on July 2021, and eventually as a Fully Accredited Training Institution on June 2024. This underscores the efforts and dedication to providing competent training to future dermatologists who will serve the country, more particularly the people of Cagayan Valley region. The department is also served by experienced and capable dermatology consultant staff, comprising of board-certified dermatologists with different subspecialties. The department offers a wide range of expertise to address different patients’ needs. Aside from the basic dermatology facilities, the department takes pride in having 5 header microscope used in Dermatopathology, cabinet type and panel type phototherapy units and lasers (Erbium:YAG, Nd:YAG, CO2, radio frequency, diode laser), enabling the staff and residents of SIMC deliver the highest standard of care and optimal treatment outcomes for patients.

The SIMC Psoriasis Group was organized on June 2021 with the aim of providing comprehensive support to individuals living with psoriasis and the family members, friends and care givers. Committed to address the challenges faced by a psoriasis patient, the support group focuses on raising education and awareness to both patients and the public, emotional support and to lighten the burden of psychological impact, advocacy and empowerment to effect positive changes and improve overall quality of life for the patients and their families. The support group plays a crucial role in providing holistic care promoting awareness, empowerment and improved outcomes for patients.

In 2022, SIMC Department of Dermatology and Venereology partnered with Cagayan Valley Center for Health Development to join efforts to enhance accessibility and support for our Leprosy patients. Leprosy clinic was strengthened with accessible multi drug therapy blister packs. Forums were likewise conducted to different municipal health clinics involving doctors and other healthcare providers to further extend advocacy efforts in eradicating leprosy.

“Bringing Dermatology to the People”, the department’s advocacy aims to serve patients in far-flung areas, establish network with primary care facilities and promote Dermatology as a specialty. Focused on community outreach, the department conducts regular dermatological missions, lay forums and outreach activities in various provinces, including those outside our catchment area.

As part of SIMC’s commitment to provide safe, equitable, accessible quality multi-specialty health care that is patient and community-responsive and training and research-oriented, the Department of Dermatology & Venereology continues to make a significant impact on public health in Northeastern Luzon
