The Department of Health in collaboration with the Philippine Dermatological Society and East Avenue Medical Center, Department of Dermatology recently celebrated the National Skin Detection and Prevention Week from November 11 to 15, 2019 with a Grand Re-Launching of the DOH – PDS Partnership on the National SKINWEEK Activities (National Skin Disease Detection and Prevention Week) at the EAMC Main Lobby last November 13, 2019.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Alfonso G. Nunez, III, the Medical Center Chief II of the East Avenue Medical Center, wherein he delivered key messages to address common misconceptions on Leprosy, its social stigma and discrimination as well as issues on the treatment of Leprosy, free Multi-drug therapy (MDT), and people with leprosy having a normal life. This was followed by the EAMC Dermatology Department Chairperson and the immediate past president of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia, who presented the background on the National SKINWEEK Celebration and DOH-PDS Partnership. The National Skin Disease Detection and Prevention Week was proclaimed and officially endorsed last 2000 and 2001, respectively. In 2005, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Dir. Yolanda Oliveros of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control and then PDS President Lorna Frez. In 2010, another Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Health Secretary Enrique Ona and former PDS President Georgina Pastorfide. Most recently, another MOA signed between USEC Myrna Cabotaje and current PDS President Peachy Paz- Lao that thrusted the Grand Re-Launching of the DOH-PDS Partnership. This annual month long celebration highlights Education and Information campaign directed to the general public, Community Outreach, Continuing Medical Education, and Research.
This event was followed by an inspirational Message from the Undersecretary of Health heading the Field Implementation and Coordination Team, Dr. Gerardo V. Bayugo followed by a message from the President of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao.
It was celebrated by a Ceremonial Handshake DOH-PDS Partnership by our esteemed guests from the Department of Health such as Undersecretary of Health Dr. Gerardo V. Bayugo, Dr. Leda Hernandez, Dr. Julie Rubite and Ms Pacita Alano; the President of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao together with the board members of the Philippine Dermatological Society.
This program ended with the closing remarks of Vice-President of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Francisco C. Rivera IV of Rizal Medical Center.
Let this commemorative partnership be a delightful reminder of the importance of teamwork between the DOH, PDS and EAMC. Indeed, the grand re-launching of the DOH – PDS Partnership during the National SKINWEEK Activities was indeed a momentous and successful event for the Filipino people.
