Dermatology Essentials: DOH RITM 12th Postgraduate Course
By Juan Antonio D. Cervantes
The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine has always been known to do things in a big way, and this was no less evident in its 12th postgraduate course with the theme “Dermatology Essentials”, where over 249 registrants gathered at the Bellevue Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa for the 1 1/2-day course on August 23-24, 2018. The venue was packed from start to finish by dermatologists and physicians from various specialties for diverse lectures on clinical, procedural, aesthetic, and infectious dermatology. The event was kicked off with a welcoming opening address by RITM Dermatology’s own Department Chair, Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel.
The first day started off strong with an intensive “Focus Session on the Pillars of Peeling”. Moderated by Dr. Geraldine Banate, the five-lecture series was delivered by Dr. Lucia Lourdes Castro-Fores, Dr. Ma. Angela Tomacruz-Cumagun, Dr. Marie Socouer Medina-Oblepias, Dr. Claudia Ylagan-Samonte, and past PDS President, Dr. Rosalina Nadela. This was followed by lectures on Nutraceuticals and Depigmenting agents by Dr. Clarisse Mendoza and Dr. Evangeline Handog, immediate past president of the International Society of Dermatology. Bringing her expertise on Psoriasis was the Overall Chair of the postgraduate course and RITM Dermatology Training Officer, Dr. Leilani Senador.
The next anticipated highlight of the program were two advanced lectures on dermatological lasers for hyperpigmentation and for vascular birthmarks, each respectively given by Dr. Johannes F. Dayrit, and by esteemed guest speaker and dermatologic surgeon, Associate Professor Rungsima Wanitphakdeedecha from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. Professor Rungsima Wanitphakdeedecha graciously gave a second lecture on facial countouring methods and techniques on the second day of the course.
The second day of the program, moderated by Dr. Marion Odette Alonzo and Dr. Aileen Christine Barreiro, presented clinical topics relevant to dermatologists and non-dermatologists alike – diagnosing and managing STIs and HIV by Dr. Emmerson Gale Vista; managing erythroderma by Dr. Gracia Teodosio; recognizing hidden sources of contact allergens by Dr Ricky Hipolito; proper steroid use in Atopic Dermatitis by Dr. Allan Dexter Alejo; and tips and pearls on the management of urticaria by RITM Dermatology Chair, Dr. Ma. Teresita G. Gabriel.
Modern day advances in treatment were discussed by Dr. Gisella Umali-Adasa with her talk on topical probiotics in atopic dermatitis, and in Dr. Johannes Dayrit’s presentation on organic hypermineralized thermal water.
Updates on the management of acne and acne scars were discussed by Dr. Ma. Teresita Gabriel and Dr. Rosalina Nadela. Dr. Luella Escueta-Alcos’ discussed facts and fallacies on photoprotection while Dr. Mary Jo Kristine Bunagan’s gave an interesting talk on hair cosmetics.
Dr. Jose Joven Cruz, a plastic surgeon expanded on microbial biofilms. Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Adrian Peter Desquitado shared his knowledge and experience on fundamentals of sclerotherapy.
It is no question that RITM Dermatology not only provided a multifaceted and informative postgraduate course, but also achieved the goal of making the entire program and each of the 23 lectures relevant, engaging, and enjoyable, standards befitting the PDS.
