The Fifteenth Post-graduate Course of the Department of Dermatology of the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center
In cooperation with the Skin Research Foundation of the Philippines. SKINVIGORATE – Synergy of Advanced Dermatology and Lifestyle Medicine was held last June 21, 2017 at the Ruby Ballroom of Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila. To a strong crowd of PDS dermatologists and fellow physicians alike, the room was livened up by Drs. Melanie Joy Doria-Ruiz and Kara Melissa Torres and formally welcomed by our Chairman, the Over-all Head of the Organizing Committee – Dr. Ma. Flordeliz Abad-Casintahan.
True to form, the strong list of topics started on a high note with Dr. Mara Therese Evangelista tackling Cosmeceuticals and Skin Aging: Translating Scientific Evidence into Clinical Practice. Paralleling the previous and providing an in-depth exploration on the Active Properties of Oral Anti-Aging Treatment and Supplements Commonly Prescribed in Dermatology, Dr. Johannes Dayrit took to task and delivered. My “Chemical” Romance: The Classic Love Affair of Chemical Peels and Perfect Skin by Dr. Zharlah Gulmatico-Flores untangled dermatological dilemmas concerning chemical peels and provided a very welcome algorithmic approach to management. Moderated by Dr. Lillian Lopez-Villafuerte, attendees were provided with a stimulating exchange, from which patients would benefit from evidence-based advice regarding previous three topics.
With the latter half of the morning being moderated by Dr. Abelaine Venida-Tablizo, Dr. Camille Berenguer-Angeles – talking about Facial Enhancement with Botulinum Toxin and Soft Tissue Fillers quite remarkably spoke about bringing the best out of your facial features with emphasis on it being both a science and an art. A welcome discussion regarding Nd:YAG laser for pigmentation- Expectation vs. Reality by Dr. Karen Grace Gavino-Dionisio talked about in addition, managing patient expectations. Ending the morning session was Dr. Armelia Andrea Torres discussing Mesotherapy in Skin Rejuvenation which included most importantly her expert opinion on pharmaceutical combinations.
It was a full day indeed learning themes concerning “Skinvigoration” with the afternoon starting off with Cosmetic Procedures and Breakthrough Therapies for Hair Loss by Dr. Mary Jo Kristine Bunagan. Her passion comes to life with talks of Current Evidence and Future Potential. A patient-centered discussion on Camouflaging: Skin Deep Solutions that Address Psychological and Social Concerns was made by Dr. Michelle Barcelona Manuel from which included was a social experiment that made both a bittersweet and a beautiful impression of beauty to everybody. Dr. Elizabeth Amelia Tianco moderated this part rather engagingly. A fresh take both simple and complex on a lecture about Weight Science- The Changing Paradigm of Obesity Treatment was made by Dr. Jan Paolo Dipasupil. Most significantly, Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo talked about her humble beginnings in Entrepreneurial Dermatology with much emphasis on Aivee’s High Five – Mindset, Planning, Execution, Managing & Practicing and Expansion. It ended candidly and impressively been moderated by a lively Dr. Ma. Luisa Abad-Venida with the charming Dr. Daisy King-Ismael closing and inviting guests to the next Post-Graduate Course.
The bar was definitely set high with a venue that echoed the high expectations that was set upon while making a well-thought list of topics most relevant in our current practice of Dermatology. It was an exhaustive discussion all day that was amazingly well received by all. Truly, Integrity, Competence and Professionalism were taken to heart in every step of this course. Most importantly, the success of this event is shared by paying it forward to the attendees the gift of knowledge and by extension, to our patients who will be receiving excellent patient care and the simple joy of being skinvigorated inside and out.
