The East Avenue Medical Center Department of Dermatology, in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society Laser Subspecialty Core group hosted the April’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled, “Stay Connected: Transcending Boundaries in Health Systems” last April 26, 2017 at the Nathan Hall of GSK Headquarters, Makati City. In line with the 25th Anniversary of the department, the theme was blue and silver.
To open the CME, welcoming remarks were given by the department Chairperson, Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia. The CME was divided into two parts. The first set of lectures were about Networking and Health Systems in Dermatology. Dr. John Q. Wong, an epidemiologist who is part of the DOH Formulary Executive Committee, gave a lecture entitled “Skin Diseases: Scaling the Disease Burden Mountain”, wherein he discussed on the burden of disease and its importance in our field of Dermatology. For us dermatologists, he showed the local burden on diseases such as dermatitis, scabies, acne vulgaris, viral skin diseases, and psoriasis, giving us more bearing in our role in public health as dermatologists.
The second speaker, Dr. Francisco Tranquilino, our Philippine Representative to the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufactures and Associations, spoke about the Mexico City Principles and its impact on health care professionals and their interaction with the pharmaceutical industry. The lecture gave us insights on the different ethical principles that should guide us in how we let different marketing strategies of pharmaceutical companies affect our management for the patients.
In order to assess the knowledge gained by the residents during the lecture, an interactive online quiz game, Kahoot, was utilized. The quiz was participated by the representatives of the different PDS institutions which were challenged to answer questions with speed and accuracy. The St. Lukes Medical Center won the game, followed by the University of Santo Tomas Hospital and the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center.
The second part of the CME was also the first of the Continuing Laser Education series by the PDS Laser subspecialty core group, moderated by the core group head, Dr. Maria Pilar Leuenberger. Dr. Alma Amado’s lecture on “Laser Update: CO2 Laser, Down Under” and Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo’s lecture on “Laser Advances in Skin Rejuvenation” discussed updates in laser technology for the vulvovaginal area and for skin rejuvenation, respectively. The importance of knowing the physics of how each laser works and knowing which laser services are appropriate for our patients was highlighted during the forum in order to distinguish ourselves as the DermAuthority.
To end the day, closing remarks were given by the EAMC Chairperson and PDS President, Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia.
Despite the distance and the traffic, a total of 135 doctors were able to attend the CME and approximately 120 PDS resident and consultants were able to participate using the simultaneous webcast. It was another fruitful day filled with learning, coupled with a fun interchange of knowledge. Indeed, we got connected to stay updated.
