The Makati Medical Center Department of Dermatology held its 11th Post-Graduate Course entitled “SKINnovations: The Cutting Edge” last September 19, 2017 at the 8th floor Auditorium of Tower 2, Makati Medical Center. The whole-day event was an interesting mix of topics from basic to aesthetic dermatology focusing on the latest advances applicable for today’s practice.
The postgraduate course was mainly divided into lecture series on contact dermatitis, pigmented neoplasms and cosmetic dermatology. The program was kick-started by lectures given by our very own contact dermatitis core group with Dr. Lucia O. Castro-Fores moderating the session. The first lecture was given by Dr. Sarah Grace M. Tan who focused on the importance of patch testing and its application in Occupational Dermatology while the second lecture given by Dr. Sharon O. Lim focused on decoding and deciphering cosmetic product labels. These were followed by a lecture on pigmented contact dermatitis by the renowned Dr. Vermen M. Verallo-Rowell. Dr. Verallo-Rowell shared a number of her cases with the audience and emphasized the importance of a good clinical eye as this disease is often misdiagnosed in brown skinned individuals. For the fourth lecture, Dr. Valerie Floro-Herbosa revisited the most common allergens encountered in the field of dermatology.
This was concluded by the interactive game of Kahoot. Finally, to close the lecture series, Dr. Katrina M. Canlas-Estrella shared her expertise on skin prick test and radioallergosorbent test.
One of the most awaited portions of the event was the cosmetic dermatology lecture series wherein esteemed dermatologists gave insight on the latest innovations on skin rejuvenation techniques followed by a live demonstration on actual patients. This part of the program was moderated by Dr. Ma. Lourdes Aragon-de Veyra who maintained a lively and interactive discussion with the audience during the demonstration and also shared her experiences with these techniques.
Dr. Guia Therese F. Jorge and the renowned Dr. Atchima Suwanchinda, from Ramathibodi Hospital in Thailand, discussed the use of threads and skin boosters and fillers and toxin injections, respectively. The live demonstration was a treat for the audience who saw the different techniques of the 2 dermatologists
The last of the lecture series, which was moderated by Dr. Sherwin A. Llego, focused on pigmented neoplasms. For the first part of the series, Dr. Elsie Reynosa P. Floreza, presented a clear and simplified discussion on the different dermoscopic clues for common pigmented neoplasms. After which, another fun and interactive game of Kahoot was done. This was followed by another informative lecture by our very own Dr. Krisinda Dim-Jamora.
