Silver Linings in Dermatology: Exploring a Bright Prospect in Skin Care Through Advanced Innovations

The East Avenue Medical Center Department of Dermatology held its 4th postgraduate course in Metro Manila entitled, “Silver Linings in Dermatology: Exploring a Bright Prospect in Skin Care through Advanced Innovations” held last August 18, 2017 at the Luxent Hotel, Timog Avenue, Quezon City. This activity adds to the roster of Postgraduate courses organized by the EAMC Department of Dermatology, along with the 13 regional Postgraduate courses done in the past. The event was blessed with good weather, with a packed venue and a good number of participants. To start off the day, we were welcomed with kind words from our postgraduate Chair, Dr. Vilma O. Pelino. The master of ceremonies for the morning session was led by Dr. Carla-Pagtakhan.

For the first lecture, we were graced with the presence of our Chairman Emeritus, Dr. Monina A. Macam, who tackled the ‘Clinical Pearls on Management of Acne Scars’ focusing on the different modalities for acne treatment. A more in-depth discussion about the different laser modalities for acne treatment was given by Dr. Loverna Arcilla Santos and for skin pigmentation by Dr. Catherine Mendoza. Dr. Mary Elizabeth Oreta-Dimayuga, spoke about the vibrant and youthful prospect of facial contouring with Botulinum Toxin and fillers.

Indeed, the morning was filled with a plethora of topics and and an abundance of information from our different speakers. Two symposiums were given by Ms. Emily Choy discussing about the latest innovation on laser technology for tattoo removal and skin pigmentations and Dr. Teresita Gabriel speaking about the current guidelines in acne treatment. The next segment focused on Phototherapy, with Dr. Vanessa Carpio, sharing her pearls and expertise on the latest updates of phototherapy, which was further elaborated by Dr. Maria Deanna S. Ramiscal, discussing the role of phototherapy and its clinical uses.

Our morning session was concluded by our chairperson and president of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia sharing her expertise and clinical pearls on the trends and management in patients with atopic dermatitis. Dr. Rosalina Nadela, former president of the Philippine Dermatological Society, delivered a lecture on managing patients with papulopustular acne, which was drawn from the guidelines of care for Acne Vulgaris by the American Academy of Dermatology.

The afternoon session was facilitated by Dr. Charlene Ang-Tiu. A post-lunch symposium by Dr. Allan Dexter Alejo discussed the current advantages of proactive treatment of atopic dermatitis. In light of the breaking data on the use of biologics in the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, Dr. Maria Deanna S. Ramiscal, was welcomed back on stage to share her knowledge.  Afterwards, Dr. Jaime Nunez gave an enlightening talk on the ethical issues involved in dermatology and its relevance in our present setting, more specifically for the commercial-based dermatologists.

Our international speaker, Dr. Stephen William Eubanks, who is a managing partner for the Dermatology and Laser Center at Harvard Park, gave a very informative symposium on the use of lasers in treating vascular lesions. Dr. Teresita Gabriel was welcomed once again, this time giving a very interactive discussion on the biological effects of glutathione in managing psoriasis. Dr. Claudia Samonte gave a video-assisted lecture and demonstration on mesotherapy with mesohyal for improving skin lines and its anti-aging effects. Dr. Christina L. Tanciangco-Javier gave her expert opinion on fractional CO2 skin laser resurfacing for a younger, more radiant look. Last but not the least, Dr. Ma. Socouer Oblepias gave useful tips on skin tightening followed by a live demonstration on the use monopolar radiofrequency machine. The day ended with a closing remark from Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia.

The day was filled with learning and wisdom from our esteemed speakers. Through the advancement of latest innovations and through expert care, beautiful and healthy skin can be achieved. Thus, in celebration of the 25th Silver Anniversary, it was a silver lining indeed. Kudos to the Department for another milestone achieved.
