The Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc. Dermatology Residency Program offers a unique combination of traditional training by managing patients in charity clinics supervised by faculty staff, as well as early exposure to preceptorship with master Dermatologists. This empowers the resident with the best and the latest therapeutic innovations. Dermatology, being a highly visual skill as well as an art in practice, the close supervision by preceptors and one-to-one teaching is a powerful tool that gives the resident a good sense of the holistic approach to Dermatology practice.
Dermatology training is organized into three separate rotations, each led by a senior resident. All teams spend approximately 4 months in each of the SCF clinical facilities: Quirino Memorial Medical Center, a government hospital that is open to all indigent patients. Ospital ng Makati, a charity hospital for residents of Makati City, and preceptorship rotations: with Dr. Sylvia Jacinto, Dr. Jasmin Jamora, Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell and Dr. Nellie T. Yu. SCFI also has a Dermatologic Surgery Subspecialty Clinic headed by Dr. Krisinda Dim- Jamora, the only Philippine member of the American College of Mohs Surgery. Moreover, SCFI is also affiliated with the Philippine Children’s Medical Center for rotations in Pediatric Dermatology with Dr. Rowena Romero-Francisco and Dr. Edna Baello.
Basic Dermatologic training is obtained in the out-patient clinics, where patients are seen primarily by residents under the supervision of faculty members. Free consultations, medicines and services are offered by SCFI in the out-patient clinics. The residents see patients at the Dermatology-OPD where they are made to describe, diagnose, give differential diagnoses, approaches to management and therapy of common as wells as more serious, life-threatening diseases.
Procedures such as Electrodessication and Curettage, Shave, Elliptical, Scissor excisions, Intralesional steroid injection, Chemical peels are also done for free under the direct supervision of the consultants. Other procedures such as Skin Punch Biopsy, Microdermabrasion, etc are done for a minimal fee.
The Skin and Cancer Foundation also boasts of its Dermatopathology Laboratory which receives and processes biopsies from all over Metro Manila and other provinces. Reading of skin specimens are done by three esteemed Dermatopathologists, Dr. Jasmin Jamora, Dr. Yolanda Obieta, and Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell. Residents undergo a three-year residency program leading to eligibility for Diplomate status after passing the Philippine Board of Dermatology, and leading to certification and membership as a Fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society.

In 1984, four U.S.-trained Dermatologists: Dr. Vermen M. Verallo (Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Diplomate U.S.A. Dermatology Boards), Dr. Judy Y. Cuaso (University of Pennsylvania, Diplomate, Dermatology, USA), Dr. Manuel O. Fernandez Jr. (Temple University, Pennsylvania, board-eligible US Dermatology Boards) and Dr. Sylvia S. Jacinto (New York University-Bellevue Medical Center, board-eligible, US Dermatology Boards) formed the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc. with the vision to train provincial candidates in order to place well-trained Dermatologists all over the Philippines to practice in the underserved areas.
The Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc. (SCFI) was the second approved program for Dermatology residency of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS). It is one of now 11 approved Dermatology residency programs of the PDS. Since then, SCFI has placed almost 200 graduates all over the Philippines including Mindanao, with almost half of its graduates practicing in the provinces, while the rest in Metro Manila teach in the Residency program of SCFI gratis. SCFI has also expanded its vision to train other Asian medical graduates to help the Philippines achieve a reputation as a good training center for Dermatology in Southeast Asia.
