The Department of Dermatology of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center was first established in 1977 as a Section, under the Department of Internal Medicine. Spearheaded by a single Dermatology consultant, Dr. Rosario R. Canete, the Section held outpatient consultations from Monday to Friday for 2 hours a day, occupying a single cubicle at the hospital’s outpatient department. In 1980, the Section started the Preceptorship program wherein a preceptee underwent training for (3) three years. The graduates were allowed to take the Diplomate Certifying exam given by the Philippine Society of Aesthetic medicine (PSAM).
The formal Dermatology Residency Training at OMMC started in 1988 as a one Resident – one consultant team. Dr. Eileen Regalado-Morales was the first resident of the Section (the department’s current Residency Training Officer). From 1977 to 1996, Dr. Canete headed the department as its Chairman. During her term, the Dermatology Residency Training Program already received full accreditation by the Philippine Society of Cutaneous Medicine in 1995.
Dr. Eileen Regalado-Morales then headed the department between the years 1996 to 1998. Her greatest achievement was to transform the one cubicle room to a complete facility now, occupying a 305 square meter area of the hospital’s ground floor, furnished with the basic dermatology equipment and services. In the ensuing years, Dr. Marcellano Cruz was invited to join the Section’s roster of consultants as the STD/HIV specialist and Dermatologic Surgeon while Dr. Amelita Tanglao-De Guzman, became the department’s Dermatopathologist.
Since 1998, Dr. Benedicto L. Carpio, a fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society has served as the Chairman, while Dr. Eileen Regalado-Morales, the previous head of the Section serves as the Residency Training Officer. Under their leadership, the Section was elevated to Department Status in 2002; which was after thorough screening and evaluation of the section’s ability to manage an increasing number of patients. That same year, four graduates of the residency training program shared the prestige of being Specialty Board Topnotchers.
In 2003, after the unification of the two premier dermatology societies in the country, the Department and its training program was given Full Accreditation by the Philippine Dermatological Society.
In 2004, another consultant joined the Department Dr. Pearlie Portugal, handling the Immunodermatology lecture series. The following year, Dr. Jonathan Dizon became part of the department as its Cosmetic and Laser Surgery consultant.
In 2008 and 2010, two of the department’s residency training graduates, Dr. Ma. May Jasmin Ramos-Yason and Dr. Armelia Lapitan-Torres joined the department’s consultant staff. Dr. Yason handled Immunodermatology and Contact Dermatitis while Dr. Torres became the department’s Research Coordinator and Photomedicine consultant.
In 2011, Dr. Ida Tiongco, a Dermatologic Surgeon from Cornell University, joined the roster of consultants. In that same year, the Department embarked on the project of making OMMC, the Premier Dermatologic Surgery Center in the Philippines. This year 2013, the Department will be taking on another milestone project which is the creation of a Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) clinic to cater to the growing burden of STD even among the youth. Though currently still in its initial stages, the department has been conducting dermatologic surgery workshops and STD seminars for residents and consultants and has been doing fund-raising activities to make these endeavors a reality.
The Department takes pride in having a stringent residency training program that encompasses a diverse exposure to both pathologic and cosmetic cases. Residents going through the three year program are guaranteed quality supervisions in various subspecialties such as clinical dermatology, dermatopathology, medical mycology, investigative dermatology and surgical dermatology. Graduates of the department have consistently garnered top places in the Specialty Board Exams and have won several awards in Research both interhospital and interdepartmental level.
It is the mission of the Department to train physicians in the art and science of Dermatology, while providing excellent as well as compassionate service to patients of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center.
Indeed, from its humble beginnings, the department has now grown in leaps and bounds to become the premier skin, hair and nail referral center of the City of Manila.
