MMC - History

The Department of Dermatology was organized to serve the dermatological needs of Makati Medical Center, its charity program, and the Center’s Internship Training Program.

It was founded by Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez, Sr. who became its first chairman (1988-2000), along with Drs. Thelma V. Leelin, Vermen Verallo-Rowell, and Filomena L. Montinola as senior consultants.  Dr. Manuel O. Fernandez Jr. later joined the consultant staff after training in Dermatologic-Plastic Surgery in the United States.  Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell was the second chairman of the department heading it from 2001-2006. Dr. Imelda Cabral-Villar, who also was the first graduate, produced by the Residency Training Program, followed from October 1, 2006-2008,.  Dr. Ma. Purita Paz-Lao then took office from 2008 up to present.

The Dermatology department initiated in 1988 its own 3-year residency program, which was promptly accredited by the Philippine Board of Dermatology. To maintain a high quality of training, it limits the number of residents accepted into the program.

The department continually updates itself by active participation of its staff members and residents in Postgraduate courses, local and international conventions, Continuing Medical Education courses, and annual training workshops. Its library is equipped with the latest books, publication and online journals. Research is a major part of its training program producing excellent award-winning research papers. This is complemented by the acquisition of state-of-the-art technical equipment including a light microscope, 5-header microscope, fluorescent microscope, VISIA skin analysis machine, mexameter and sebumeter. On July 2002, the MCF Phototherapy and Laser Center was opened to honor Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez, Sr. The center, now renamed MCF Dermlaser and Phototherapy Center, boasts of 12 laser and light machines, 2 phototherapy units (1 Daavlin and 1 Houva), 1 Hand and Foot UVA phototherapy unit and 1 Hand-held UVB phototherapy unit.

Subspecialty in Dermatology is another strong feature of the department. These include Dermatopathology, Immunodermatology, Dermatologic and Laser Surgery, Dermatologic Cosmetic, Mohs Microsurgery, Photomedicine, Pediatric Dermatology, Contact Dermatitis, Occupational and Environmental Dermatology.
