The Philippine Dermatological Society sponsored the very first MasterChef cooking competition at Café Ysabel in 2014. Due to the raging success of this event, PDS members begged for more. Hence, last August 28, 2016, the PDS decided to make a bigger, better PDS cooking competition, aka MasterChef 2, held at the prestigious Global Academy, the very first culinary school in the Philippines to receive The World Association of Chef’s Societies Recognition for Quality Culinary Education. It was a fun and memorable experience for all the participants to let their hair down (or up in a professional chef’s tonque) and show off their knife skills in a professional and world-class kitchen. As for the rest of the guests, it was a super fun all-day affair filled with delicious food and wine, camaraderie and raffle prizes with no one leaving empty-handed.
The participants were divided into five teams and each were assigned a mystery ingredient. The team was drawn via Facebook LIVE with Chef Erika, Gina and yours truly. The five teams were named after world-famous restaurants to inspire our dermatologist chefs.
First round was entitled “Bazaar Wars”. The teams were tasked to prepare food that is usually seen in food bazaars. The PDS members who chose not to cook happily sampled the dishes made by their colleagues and voted for their favorites via the people’s choice award. Everyone gave it 110% making it very difficult to judge which was the best tasting one. After a nail-biting agonizing time deliberating and tallying the votes, Chef Erika De Leon finally announced the results of the People’s Choice Award.
TIED for FIRST were Team French Laundry and Team Noma
SECOND was Team Arzak
THIRD was Team Alinea
FOURTH was Team Mugaritz
Based on the scores of the three Global Academy chef judges, Team Alinea was in 1st place with Team Noma as the runner up.
Since there can only be ONE winner (everyone being so competitive and all), the Chefs decided to create a tie-breaker (dun dun dun dun…). The next challenge was called Mystery Box…the box revealing pork, peas and oranges! Team Noma made a very delicate pork roulade in orange reduction with a side of pea puree and a refreshing salad. Not to be outdone, Team Alinea prepared grilled pork, apple and zucchini skewers with a side of hearty pea soup and a mixed greens and orange salad. And now for the moment of truth…the Master Chef 2 undisputed champion is none other than…Team Noma!!! Special awards were given to Homer Cudel as Most Valuable Player, Janet De Grano for Sugar Rush Award (Best Dessert), Allan Pua for Blemish Free Award (Cleanest kitchen workplace) and Team Alinea received the Picture Perfect award (Best Dish Plating).
The audience/judges were treated to a delightful morning snack, tummy-filling buffet lunch, and an afternoon of Spanish merienda. While the kitchen was buzzling with activity filling up the room with mouth-watering aroma, celebrity Chefs Rob Pengson and Erika De Leon demonstrated their culinary prowess and entertained the audience with some easy-to-prepare dishes. The yPDS would like to thank The PDS Board of Directors for 2015-2016 for their unwavering support of MasterChef 2.
