The Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center Department of Dermatology held its Continuing Medical Education entitled, “Leadership #Perfection” in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society Leprosy Subspecialty core group last June 28, 2017 at the Henry Sy Sr. Auditorium, St. Luke’s Global, Taguig.
The symposium, hosted by Dr. Mary Ann A. Abesamis and graced by proficient and distinguished speakers, had a two-part program that focused on the problems faced by dermatologists in the management of Hansen’s disease and leadership in health care.
The event commenced with a solemn invocation by the Training Officer, Dr. Eileen Regalado-Morales, followed by an opening remark from the Chairman, Dr. Benedicto dL Carpio. A case of a leprosy patient with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency was thoroughly presented by one of the residents, Dr. Camelia Faye Ramirez-Tuazon. Dr. Leilani R. Senador, Training Officer of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine-Department of Dermatology then shared her expertise on therapeutic dilemmas in such patients, highlighting the current trends in the treatment of Hansen’s Disease with concomitant G6PD deficiency under the World Health Organization, as well as recommendations from other leading Hansen’s Disease authorities.
Dr. Ma. Minerva P. Calimag, President of the Asian and Oceanic Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and Immediate Past President of the Philippine Medical Association lectured on the different theories of stewardship and the top qualities of being a leader. Furthermore, clinical psychologists from the National Center for Mental Health, Ms. Nyra Angie M. Cabantug and Ms. Ely H. Espinosa Jr. enlightened the audience with the discussion of the leadership styles of the Chairmen and Training Officers of the 11 PDS-Accredited Residency Training Programs. Participants were given the opportunity to further clarify subject matters through an interactive open forum.
Armed with an intellectually stimulating update on the therapeutics of Hansen’s Disease, as well as an emotionally touching discussion on the various facets of Leadership, the afternoon draw to an end with PDS President Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia giving updates regarding the upcoming events of the society.
