The Section of Dermatology of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center held its 14th Post-graduate course entitled “Five-Star Dermatologist” at Sequoia Hotel, Timog Avenue, Quezon City on July 27, 2017. The theme was based on the concept of a “five-star physician” proposed by the World Health Organization. The wide array of topics lined up focused on the good qualities that should epitomize a five-star dermatologist: (1) a diligent educator; (2) a holistic healthcare-provider; (3) a meticulous researcher; (4) a passionate social advocate; and (5) an inspiring leader.
The strong monsoon rain did not dampen the spirits of our two diligent and enthusiastic educators who jumpstarted the scientific meeting with such contagious energy. Dr. Charlene Ang-Tiu delivered an interactive, picturesque lecture on indications and updates on Mohs micrographic surgery. Dr. Rica Mallari talked about challenges in the managementof alopecia areata.
To encourage a holistic approach to healthcare, the delegates were given updates by doctors who are experts in their respective subspecialties. With the prevalence of antibiotic resistance, Dr. Ryan Llorin, Infection Control Head, St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City, presented current treatment guidelines for particular skin and soft tissue infections. Dr. Cindy Tan shared her pearls and practical approach to the diagnosis and management of various pediatric cutaneous diseases.
We were all delighted to listen to a globally renowned, multi-awarded journalist, Mrs. Cathy Yap-Yang, who candidly shared how she prepares for her on screen appearances and gave much needed tips on power dressing and being in control during live interviews and other public speaking engagements. Truly, she has helped physicians to be more effective and confident social advocates of their areas of specialty.
During and after finishing our residency, we do our research on how to set up our own practice. The lecture given by Dr. Ma. Pilar Leuenberger was filled with a wealth of information on the realities that lie ahead of us, the decisions that we have to make, the requirements that we have to meet… from choosing our clinic staff, to filing taxes, PhilHealth issues, to setting priorities and work-life balance.
As leaders in aesthetic dermatology, we must master facial anatomy, including the changes that happen in all tissue layers during the aging process. Dr. Bernadette Arcilla talked about skin-directed therapies: topical medications for specific age groups, while Dr. Nancy Garcia- Tan tackled LASER and energy-based devices – including their indications and adverse events.
An aesthetic dermatology workshop ensued in the afternoon, with lectures, live demonstration, and hands-on experience by the delegates. Dr. Camille Angeles talked about facial contouring with the use of botulinum toxin, while Dr. Claudia Samonte discussed the indications and benefits of mesotherapy. Dr. Angel Cumagun focused on fractional resurfacing for acne scars, and Dr. Beverly Ong discussed facial aging and the use of hyaluronic acid fillers for facial rejuvenation.
The course was well-attended despite the inclement weather, as all the delegates were eager to take part in this scientific event and enhance their knowledge and skills to maximize their potential as five-star dermatologists.
