CHILD’S PLAY: Do’s and What-Nots in Pediatric Dermatoethics

The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) Department of Dermatology, in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Pediatric Subspecialty Core Group, hosted the monthly Continuing Medical Education (CME) entitled “CHILD’S PLAY: Do’s and What-Nots in Pediatric Dermatoethics” last July 26, 2017 at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

The lively symposium was hosted by Dr. Kara Melissa Torres and moderated by Dr. Melanie Doria-Ruiz. The event kicked off with updates on medical ethics for the modern-day dermatologist followed by a showcase of interesting pediatric dermatology cases catered with an expert discussion from the PDS pediatric dermatology group.

The ever-charming vice Chair of JRRMMC Department of Dermatology and immediate past president of PDS, Dr. Daisy King-Ismael, welcomed all the participants as everyone was eager to get the afternoon’s discussion underway.

For the first part, Dr. Patrick Gerard Moral, chair of the UST Bioethics Department, delivered a dynamic and interactive discussion on consent, confidentiality, and communication issues among our pediatric patients. He highlighted the importance of speaking to the patients themselves despite their age, and patient with parental consent to treatments. This was followed by Dr. Pacifico Eric Calderon’s timely presentation on the physician code of ethics in the context of social media. He gave a number of guidelines to follow in tackling the murky world of social media, differentiating between the personal and professional persona online and how to use social media to one’s advantage. Dr. Janelle G. Go presented a theoretical difficult case of child abuse while Atty. Dr. Elizabeth Amelia V. Tianco, JRRMMC Dermatology Consultant, and Dr. Jamie P. Nunez, Chair of the Ethics Committee (PDS) highlighted the medico-legal and ethical aspects of the case, respectively.

For the second part of the CME, interesting pediatric dermatology cases from JRRMMC were presented. Dr. Ma. Christina B. Gulfan presented a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) with multi-organ involvement. The reactor for the case, Dr. Angela Katrina Medina-Esguerra, gave an in-depth discussion on LCH, sharing the must-knows and updates in management. Dr. Riza R. Milante shared an interesting case of incontinentia pigmenti (IP) with Dr. Marie Eleanore Ochoa-Nicolas as the reactor. Dr. Ochoa-Nicolas thoroughly discussed the relationship between the genetic pathophysiology and the clinical manifestations of IP, such that by the end of the discussion the participants would be able to recognize and manage IP expertly. The day was completed with an open forum where the panel reactors willingly answered questions from the participants. All lecturers and panel reactors were awarded with Certificates of Appreciation by Dr. Ma Angela M. Lavadia, President of the PDS, and Dr. Daisy King-Ismael.

The JRRMMC Department of Dermatology with the Pediatric Dermatology Core Group extends their gratitude to the lively 150+ attendees and 80+ webinar participants. These monthly CMEs defines the PDS #DermAuthority as experts striving to be even better in our field. Hail to the Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millenials!
