The East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC), in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Photodermatology Subspecialty Core Group, hosted an inspirational CME last March 30, 2016 at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City.
To kick start the program, Dr. Vanessa Carpio, the PDS Health Information System (HIS) Chairperson, announced some updates regarding PDS HIS. The event was then formally opened by Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia, Chairperson of the EAMC Dermatology and Vice President of the PDS, with Dr. Tricia Manlongat-Malahito as the lively and lovely moderator.
Prior to the series of lectures, a short interactive exercise entitled “What kind of a leader are you?” was conducted by Dr. Alexis Paula Ibanez, a second year EAMC resident. The exercise was based on the Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire from the Boston University, a quick and easy self-assessment tool to determine one’s inclinations as a leader.
The lectures began with Dr. Ma. Angela M. Lavadia, who inspired us with the new concepts of medical leadership and its application to the medical setting with her lecture entitled “Medical Leadership: Scope and Style”.
To keep the ball rolling, Dr. Jamie Nunez, a member of the Ethics committee and an inspirational speaker in numerous PDS activities, enlightened the audience with his lively lecture on “Qualities of a Leader”.
Afterwards, the lectures shifted from medical leadership to updates on photodermatology, with back to back lectures by our esteemed photodermatologists. Dr. Pearl Weena Marie Sabido, who took her fellowship training in Phototherapy under the International Society of Dermatology (ISD) Mentorship Program, lectured on “Photodermatology in Mycosis Fungoides”. On the other hand, Dr. Lily Lyralin Laconico-Tumalad, currently an active consultant at EAMC, who took her training in Phototherapy at the National Skin Center in Singapore, gave us an overview on “Phototherapy in Children”.
An echo from the 74th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology held last March 2016 in Washington DC was shared by EAMC Dermatology chief resident, Dr. Patricia Ysabel Oreta. She is also an international scholar and one of the 7 women dermatologists from around the globe to have received the Women’s Dermatological Society travel grant this year. Finally, the program was officially closed by PDS CME Committee Chair, Dr. Chittina De Ocampo- Santiago.
It was indeed a successful event for all, not only by enhancing our knowledge on photodermatology updates but also by empowering our leadership skills towards becoming holistic dermatology leaders that we can be. Indeed, to exemplify true excellence in leadership is what makes us the REAL DermAuthority.
